Americas GP: Qualifying results and report

 In News

Despite basically excellent weather and track conditions for qualifying, it was very much an uphill task for John – continuing to work on overcoming significant setup issues that have beset him across this weekend in Austin.

John is still unhappy with the bike (assembled following the loss of his bike last race when Masbou took him out in Qatar and the bike was written off against the wall). He has a new bike which the team built up when they arrived here, a 2012 FTR chassis. So everything has needed setting up from almost zero. Has also had to contend with a new ECU: the new unit has not performed as required – which is different to his own settings. And it wasn’t performing properly in the first practice sessions, leaving John with insufficient engine braking which has led to turn-in problems.

Qualifying was pretty much the same as the previous session, and as John wasn’t confident with the feel of the bike and the lack of consistency, his times were well down.

So it’s not surprising that with all this to contend with plus a completely new and challenging track that John was unable to be as far up the grid as he might have hoped. he starts tomorrow’s race from 28th on the grid.

The team will go through things again tonight to see if they can improve the bike for warm up.
