John’s blog: Qatar Day One, FP1 & FP2
It’s great to be starting the new race season today, in some ways it seems it’s been ages since we finished Valencia last year, but then again it feels like I’ve not been away. We’ve got some extra track time here so we started with two practice sessions tonight.
The new bike from Honda looks excellent and it’s had some new parts since we finished the test in Jerez. The engine is slightly different and gives us a small increase in power which will help a bit.
FP1 didn’t go well and I lost the clutch on the first lap so had to come in a sit out a few laps until the guys sorted it. They did a very quick strip down and repair and I was out again, missing only five or six laps. But that was enough to upset your thoughts a little and I eventually made 27th place and was 3.047 down on Fenati who was fastest. Good to see three Hondas in the top ten too…
I enjoyed the second session much more. I felt relaxed and pretty confident and it all flowed quite well with my times coming down nicely.
I ended up P8 0.773 off Fenati who again topped the times. I managed a few reds later on in the session too which I’m pleased about and what’s more important is that I know where I need to improve and what I must do.
The bike feels good and Toni my crew chief is really helping me along. So we’ll go through some data while it’s fresh in my head and then off to bed and a little rest tomorrow during the day before were back here.
Yes, I’m quite pleased with today as a step in the right direction.
As always – thanks to you all for your support,
