John’s Blog: Jerez Qualifying
It was another cold start to the day today and I was wondering if it was a mistake to have worn just my shorts and polo shirt while I waited for the sun to warm things up! The third practice started well and I was on the pace as we settled into the first few laps trying some new settings. However as the times came down from yesterday I fell back through the field.
It wasn’t until the end of the session and my last few laps that I got back up into the top half ending the session in 14th 1.076s behind Efren who again topped the list. Whilst I had improved my time over yesterday by almost half a second, we were still trying to find greater feel for qualifying.’
When it came to approaching Qualifying, we thought about our issues through all the free practice sessions and decided to make some small changes before qualifying to try to improve stability. It was a small risk but worth a try.
We made a small step forward and I wanted to try a change in the rear shock to see if that improved things further. That wasn’t so good, so I came in for a second time and the guys did a great job to quickly go back to the other shock again.
With little time left of the session I went out and immediately managed to take a second off my time. That was all I could do and ended qualifying in 9th place: another top ten which wasn’t so bad, although I had hoped for better. Talking to other riders it seems everyone was suffering lack of grip in the session.
Now all we have to do is decide what we do for the race! Which is always a compromise with the changing conditions, but the forecast is hot and sunny and we’re not far away from the top guys, so I’m happy.
Thanks again for all your support!
