John McPhee battles brilliantly but ultimately retires in tricky Aragon race

Today’s Aragon GP started off in gloomy, misty conditions with a damp but drying track.
Starting from eighth on the grid John immediately shot into fourth by the first corner and held the spot through the first, tight, opening laps.

It was a hard-fought tussle at the front and by lap 4 John had been shuffled down to 5th on the back of the leading group. However John stuck with it and with 15 laps to go John had moved back up to 4th.

John had moved into third place behind Alex Rins and Alex Marquez with 13 laps to go, ahead of Jakub Kornfeil – and with ten laps remaining he was slotted into second behind Alex Marquez and with Kornfeil on his tail having gone off track.

Kornfeil was able to get underneath John on the back straight, pushing him back to third – and when Alex Marquez faltered and moved back into the racing line directly in front of him at the ‘corkscrew’ section, John was caught off-guard and slipped off track momentarily. The young Scot kept his head though and immediately picked up his bike and rejoined in eighth.

Miguel Oliveira moved ahead of John with eight laps to go, leaving John in ninth – but with 7 laps to go John crashed again, this time not being able to rejoin the race.

It was a sad and frustrating end to an exciting race, where John had demonstrated not only excellent pace, but excellent racing and riding too.
The race was eventually won by Romano Fenati with Alex Marquez second and Danny Kent in third.

John McPhee
“I’m gutted really. I was feeling very confident today. And I was riding a pretty smart race, sticking with the leading group and trying not to take risks. But Marquez made a bit of a mistake in the corkscrew and when he came back on I was the next rider behind and I just went a bit onto the wet part of the track and lost the front – and then there was nothing really that I could do.

It’s a shame as the podium was in reach today, but we’ve got the flyways coming up so hopefully we can get something there.”
