PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Moto3 riders John McPhee and Ayumu Sasaki made a strong start to the Grand Prix of Japan weekend at the Twin Ring Motegi, ending today’s practice sessions in third and 14th respectively. Today’s placings could be key for progressing directly to tomorrow’s Q2, with heavy rain forecast to hit the Motegi circuit on Saturday morning.

John spent much of the afternoon’s session topping the timesheets, showing his strong race pace by controlling the action until the frenetic final few moments of the practice. Setting a 1min 56.877secs lap as many riders went for time attacks, he ends the day only 0.135 secs off P1 at Honda’s home track.

“I’m quite satisfied with day one. The main focus was to both treat FP2 like a mini-qualifying but to also find the correct way for Sunday’s race, because we know there’s rain coming. My bike is working well and we’re continuing in the same way we have for the past few races, and the result is that I’m feeling comfortable already. Hopefully, we’ll be able to ride tomorrow and I’ll be able to be fast in the wet too, but the most important thing in Moto3 is to be able to fight at the front and we’re already ready to do that. It would be nice to have more laps, but I’m ready to race now.”
