Strong start to Australian GP weekend for John
PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Moto3 rider John McPhee has had a successful start to the Moto3 World Championship action at the Australian Grand Prix today, surviving tricky conditions and blustery weather at the exposed Phillip Island circuit to end the day in seventh place.
John finished FP1 this morning in fifth, finding a comfortable setting quickly as the rain came down at Phillip Island, and was able to convert his pace in the wet into an equally fast end to the day in the dry FP2. Setting a lap time of 1min 37.617secs to end the day 0.808secs from the leaders on combined times, more rain forecast for tomorrow at the seaside circuit should mean that he has already safely made it through to Q2.
“It was a shame that the rain arrived right before FP1, but we made the most of the track time to finish P5 in the wet and P7 in the dry. Right now I’m happy because my rhythm is good and I’m feeling comfortable with the bike. I was able to set all my times alone, on a track where the windy conditions mean that slipstream makes a big difference. We’ll need to assess the track conditions for tomorrow, but the target as always in Moto3 will be the front three rows. Right now my potential looks like we can do better than that, so let’s see how tomorrow shapes up and if we can challenge for the top three.”
