John fastest in testing at Jerez ahead of GP weekend
After eagerly anticipating a return to racing for nearly four months, John McPhee and teammate Khairul Idham Pawi were able to enjoy a highly successful Moto3 test today at Circuit de Jerez – Angel Nieto, with John ending the day at the top of the timesheets.
Despite being apart from his Honda NSF250RW since the QatarGP, John was quickly up to speed in the morning session and showed that he has retained his good form by setting the fastest lap of the session (1min 46.263secs).
The target for the day, particularly in the hot and greasy conditions of the second session was to accrue as many laps as possible. The Scot showed great pace with old tyres and ended the day at the top of the timesheets, as no one was able to improve upon his time from the morning.
There will be no rest for the two Moto3 riders as they head straight into their second round of the year on Friday, with Free Practice kicking off at 0900 CEST/1500 MYT. Sunday’s Moto3 race will begin at 1100 CEST/1700 MYT.
It’s been a fantastic day. I was smiling for the first three or four laps because I was just so happy to be riding the bike again and to be back here at the racetrack with my team. Honestly, the day couldn’t have gone any better. In the first session we focused mainly on just riding and trying to come back up to speed. I think the lap time we made was really respectable, so that ticked the box. Then in the second session we started to work towards the race, doing some laps on the old tyre. Overall it’s been a really good day and I can’t wait for the weekend to start.
