John to start from 18th on the grid after highside in Brno Qualifying
After a strong start to the day for John McPhee and teammate Khairul Idham Pawi, where both were making good progress at Automotodrom Brno, qualifying was unfortunately cut short for the pair after two highsides in their respective qualifying sessions. John will start tomorrow’s Moto3 race from 18th on the grid.
After having to miss the first ten minutes of FP3 due to a penalty from FP2, as did 14 others riders including his teammate, John was eager to focus on making the most of the time available to him to prepare for qualifying and ensure that he had a place in Q2.
The Scot improved upon his time from yesterday and finished the session seventh with a lap time of 2mins 8.675secs, which saw him well within the automatic Q2 places. Unfortunately, John experienced a highside during his first flying lap in qualifying, which saw him out for the rest of the session. He will start tomorrow’s race from 18th.
John and KIP will take to the track tomorrow at 8.40am local time (2.40pm MYT) for their Warm Up session, before the 18-lap race gets underway at 11am local time (5pm MYT).
18th (2’08.675 – FP3)
It’s frustrating of course, but I’m okay. I was a little winded when I went down, but that’s all. We knew there was going to be a little bit less grip anyway and that corner in particular has been one to watch. I was trying to turn inside Darryn Binder because I could see in front he had a moment with the rear, so I wanted to avoid any coming together with him. I started to lose the rear as a consequence and as I tried to get on the throttle the bike went and I couldn’t save it. We have good pace and good rhythm today, so to be starting 18th is not ideal. It’s a long race tomorrow though and I’m sure I can work my way through.
