Solid work on tricky day one in Jerez for John
PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Moto3 riders were hard at work in the overcast conditions at Jerez, as they started preparations for the SpanishGP. John McPhee was 17th.
John had a steady start to the morning’s Free Practice session, opting to focus on gathering long-run data. Although his 1min 47.898secs lap placed him fourth momentarily, other riders also improved in the final moments of FP1, pushing him down to 22nd. After continuing to focus on race pace in FP2 with the used tyre, John was able to improve upon his morning time. The 1min 46.674secs lap placed him 16th in session, but 17th in the combined times.
Saturday action will commence at 9am local time (3pm MYT) with Free Practice 3, before the first of the two Moto3 qualifying sessions gets underway at 12.35pm local time (6.35pm MYT).
Today was a bit of a tricky day but we solely focused on preparing for Sunday. We had a plan today to completely focus on my pace and complete lots of laps, only making one stop in FP1 and staying on the same tyre for the majority of the day. This has given us a good understanding of how our race pace should be towards the end with a used tyre. We do need to find a little bit more time on the one-lap, but consistency seems to be good. We’ll keep working in FP3 tomorrow before looking at the one lap pace for qualifying at the end of that session. We know we can be fast here over that single lap but it’s more important to be fast at the end of the race.
