Top ten for John on opening day in Austin
PETRONAS Sprinta Racing’s Moto3 riders kicked off the first Grand Prix of the Americas since 2019 today, experiencing both wet and dry conditions, with John McPhee posting the tenth fastest time around Circuit of the Americas and teammate Darryn Binder the 16th.
John had a steady start to the day, but still managed to stay inside the top 14 during the first half of a wet and rainy FP1. Battling a couple of issues, he didn’t set a flying lap in the second half of the session and his 2mins 37.868secs lap time placed him 27th. The Scot proved to be quick from the outset of FP2, heading straight to second in the dry conditions.
After putting in a series of consistent laps, John ended the session, and the day, tenth with a quickest time of 2mins 18.379secs.
I’ve enjoyed my first day back here in Austin; it’s always such a nice track to ride. It’s so technical and there is so much to take in, so you have to be fully focused at all times but I really enjoyed it. We had a couple of issues in FP1 and didn’t really put together a proper session. We know what the problem was and if we get wet weather tomorrow then we should be able to have a proper go at it. FP2 was good and we ended up tenth overall, but I did quite a long run to see how the tyre will be on race day too. I felt comfortable on the bike and, although there’s room to improve; I’m happy with day one in Austin. We don’t know what the weather will do, but we do know that we’re ready whatever the conditions.
